Here are some top tips to help you create an inspirational workspace and a routine that works.

Creating a dedicated workspace

When you think of working from home, you may come up with a blissful image of reclining on the sofa with your laptop, but this isn’t really how most people operate. If you’ve got a job to do, it’s important to be comfortable, but you also need to ensure you can switch into work mode at the start of the day. If you’re trying to work at the kitchen table or you’re balancing a laptop on your knee, you won’t be able to focus properly. It’s best to create a dedicated workspace. The moment you step into an office, you know that you’re there to work. And you should experience the same reaction when you go to your study each morning.

Think about what you need to do your job. Do you have all the equipment or technological gadgets you need? Have you got a desk and chair that will enable you to work long hours without suffering from back or shoulder pain? Make sure the room is light enough and set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature. You’re not going to be able to concentrate properly if it’s freezing and you’re sat there shivering. If you’ve got problems with the heating, address them before you start working from home. If you’ve got an old unit, contact a furnace installation company, and explore your options. In the summer months, you may wish to look into adding an air conditioning unit.

Use a diary or an app on your phone to keep your schedule up to date, and play to the best of your abilities. If you’re a morning person, start your day early, and tackle the most demanding tasks first.
