If you think about moving your business to a new location, it can be a stressful and time-consuming task. If you’re relocating temporarily, the stress levels will be high because you’ll have to supervise the team that comes in to pack up items and move it all back once construction is done or whatever project has been completed. You should always plan as much in advance as you can so that there are no surprises when it’s time to move.

Here are some steps you can take to make the moving process go more smoothly.

Step 1

You should start planning your relocation at least six months in advance, if not earlier (6 months for long-distance, less for short). This way, you can find the perfect location for your business while also checking if any nearby buildings are being renovated or torn down. You don’t want to be forced to move once you’ve found a great location that meets all your needs.

Step 2

Once you have found a new building, make sure you follow up on any loose ends before you close on the move. You’ll want to make sure that anything related to your old property, such as rent and utilities, is handled properly so that your business isn’t interrupted in any way when it comes time for the big move.

Step 3

Make sure to give yourself enough time to deal with all of the items that need to be packed up. Some things may need to be moved via a Local Moving company or might take longer because of the nature of what is being carried (artwork vs. machinery, for example). Make sure you can afford all of these costs and have enough time to pack everything up.

Step 4

You’ll also want to have a timeline for the moving process. This way, you know what day to start packing and how long it might take to pack everything up. It’s a good idea to have a few days built into your schedule for things that go wrong, as they inevitably will at some point.

Step 5

To avoid some of those problems mentioned in Step 4, you might want to consider having a few different moving crews. If one crew is busy, you can have another step up and get the job done for you quickly. This way, your business isn’t left without a team while they wait on a new crew to show up. It can sometimes take days or weeks before a new unit can be made available, and you don’t want to wait that long if at all possible.

Step 6

While the movers are working, make sure they have access to electricity and water to get your business up and running as quickly as possible once the relocation is done. If necessary, you might also want to invest in generators to ensure you have power during the process.

Step 7

Finally, don’t forget about your new Internet service. If it’s an existing business, contact your ISP before the move and find out how long it will take for them to activate service at your new location. You also want to ask if there is a fee for starting service at your new site and how long the order will take to go through (this could be several weeks).

Loose Ends

Once everything has been packed up and moved to the new location, don’t forget to follow up on any loose ends left over from your old property. You might want to ask about terminating your old lease and whether or not there’s any penalty for doing so. More than likely, you can pay until the month is up and then take the first step on your new adventure!
