Some of us experience meaningful lives. 

We wake up with a sense of purpose, live out our days, and then go to bed each night feeling proud and satisfied. “That was a good day,” we tell ourselves as we look back on the things we have accomplished.

And then there are those of us who struggle to find meaning. We don’t know what our purpose is, we don’t know what the future will hold, and we feel a deep sense of dissatisfaction. Getting out of bed in the morning, we prepare ourselves for a day that is as routine as it was the day before. Fast forward a few hours, and we go to bed feeling as if we have achieved nothing. 

So, what about you? Do you feel as if your life has meaning? Or are you wandering around aimlessly, like a feather being blown around in the wind?  If you are relating to the latter, we have some suggestions in this article. Of course, there are no easy answers. What is meaningful to one person might not be meaningful to another, but we hope what we say is useful to you. 

#1: Think about a new career

Do you enjoy going to work each day? Does it give you meaning to your life? Or are you stuck in a rut with little sense of satisfaction?

If it’s the latter, then you should try to find your true calling

You can do this by considering your skills and talents. If you’re able to find a job where you can use your gifts, you might find your purpose in life. 

You might also consider jobs where you can help others. Many people find meaning in life when they impact people’s lives in a positive way, and you might experience the same. You could train to be a teacher, social worker, or a youth worker for example, or you could begin a career in healthcare by going to nursing school. These are examples of rewarding careers but consider where your calling might lie. 

#2: Make a difference in the lives of the people around you

You don’t always need to start a new career to find meaning. You could focus on the people around you, and offer help and friendship to those who need it.

Think about the needs of your family, friends, and neighbors. Consider the people you mix with at work. If you can gain meaning by making a difference in the lives of the people you know, be mindful each day, and don’t shut yourself away from them. Ask yourself: What can I do to support the people I know today?

#3: Shake off anything that doesn’t add meaning

If your daily routine gives you no meaning, do the sensible thing: Break out of your routine! You will then have more incentive to do other things with your day, such as those activities that will give you a greater sense of purpose.

So, turn off the TV if you’re forever sat in front of it. Remove yourself from social media if your day is spent aimlessly scrolling through your news feeds. Get out of bed earlier if you’re prone to lying in for longer than you should. And then get out and enjoy some different experiences. Visit places you have never been to before. Eat foods you have never tried. Look for a new hobby. Connect with people you haven’t spoken to in a long time. 

Wil these things give you meaning to your life? Maybe. At least you will go to bed knowing that you have achieved something with your day!

#4: Set yourself daily goals

To find meaning, you need to have a plan. The plan might incorporate something we have discussed already. Or there might be other things you want to consider. Whatever the case, try to set yourself a set number of goals each day. One might be enough or even two, providing you know they are achievable. When creating your goals, begin by writing them down in one or all of the following ways:

  • Today I want to achieve…
  • Today I will  learn how to ….
  • Today I will help…
  • Today I am going to…

You will give yourself a sense of purpose if you start out with these good intentions. Providing nothing distracts you, you might also accomplish whatever you have set out to do. They don’t have to be anything life-changing (although they might be), but they will give you meaning to each day of your life. 

Finally

It’s not always easy to find meaning in life but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. For you, it might incorporate what we discussed here. Or it might be that you need to do other things to find meaning. Whatever the case, consider what you might need to do and proactively take steps to alter your life if you need to. You will find greater degrees of happiness if you do, as your life should be shaped with a lot more meaning!
