Safe Water

Michelle and her husband rushed one of their kids to the hospital because the little one was complaining of a stomachache. He also had a fever, was very weak, and had been to the washroom many many times during the day. They were worried he might be getting dehydrated so went for medical attention. Tests confirmed that he had amoebiasis which they think he caught from the water he drank at a carnival a couple of weeks earlier. The doctor even told Michelle that 500 people a year get amoebiasis in New York State in the U.S, and most of those are New York city residents. So this is not just something that happens to carnival goers. It was a lesson learned for Michelle, to never trust any water source. In our region often the rainy season can contribute to less than perfect drinking water conditions. Michelle was so upset by her son’s illness that she has decided to look at different water filtration systems. A friend told her about the reasonably priced water filter pitchers you can get, some of which are very effective in removing contaminants. She directed her to the website www.friendsofwater.com where there is extensive information about the water pitchers they sell. They have information on the results of testing the pitchers, which were found to remove 99% of contaminants, as well as most of the fluoride, along with viruses and bacteria. Michelle said that she really liked the idea of this, and that she could take small bottles of their own filtered water to events like the carnival so that something like this will not happen again. This way, she will be assured that the water her kids are drinking is safe.
